Organic farm products of Bhutan
The busiest vegetable market In Thimphu where vendors from different region of Bhutan sell variety of fruits, vegetable, spices and herbs. The market starts from 7:00am to 7:00pm on all days of week except for Mondays.
It is a two storied building, around 400 stalls which gives an opportunity for the farmers to support local agriculture and sell their organic farm products. The best time to explore this market is on the weekends as its time for weekly shopping for locals and busy hour of trade.
The first floor is filled with local products like fresh vegetables depending on the season, dried seeds, chilli powder, dried red chilli which is available throughout the year along with traditional yeast which is used in making local wine commonly known as “Ara” and many more. It also has a section where incense powder of different varieties are also available.
The lower floor is filled with imported produce and varieties of local rice products like roasted rice (Zaw), Crispy rice crackers (Mekhu), pounded maize (Kharang), tengma (flattened maize) and roasted rice (zaw).
Just in front of the market, across a cantilever footbridge is a Handicraft shops filled with goods at affordable rate and fast food restaurent filled with locals, it is one of the best spot to be in while touring Bhutan.
