In the outskirts of Thimphu, Simtokha Dzong is considered to be the first dzong built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1629.
It guards a demon which had vanished in the rock nearby, therefore named Simtokha, from Simmo (demoness) and dho (stone).
It was the first structure to incorporate both administrative and monastic bodies in the country.
Today the Dzong houses the head of the Lama’s chamber, monastic school, above the dzong one can see the ruins of the watchtower.
